Itinerary

  • Day 1:

Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Tizi n’Tichka Pass – Ait Benhaddou Kasbah – Skoura Oasis – Dades Valley

Your adventure begins with a traditional Moroccan breakfast in Marrakech before departing for the High Atlas Mountains, an imposing mountain range that separates the south of Morocco from the rest of the country. As we leave the bustling city behind, you’ll experience a drastic change in scenery—lush valleys, snow-capped peaks (in winter), and the vibrant landscapes that stretch across Morocco’s heart. We’ll make a stop at the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 meters), where you can take in the stunning panoramic views of the valleys below and the rugged terrain of the mountains, which is also home to remote Berber villages.

Next, we drive through winding roads to the Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco’s most iconic and well-preserved mud-brick villages. This fortified village is a classic example of Moroccan earthen architecture, which has been used in many Hollywood films such as Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy. You’ll have time to explore the narrow alleyways, climb to the top of the granary for sweeping views, and discover the rich history of this ancient kasbah.

Continuing our journey, we pass through the Skoura Oasis, where lush palm groves stretch across the desert floor and old kasbahs dot the landscape. In the late afternoon, we arrive in the Dades Valley, a region known for its dramatic rock formations and ancient kasbahs. Upon check-in at your hotel or guesthouse, enjoy a relaxing dinner while surrounded by the tranquility of the valley.

  • Day 2:

Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga – Camel Ride – Sunset in Erg Chebbi Dunes – Desert Camp

After breakfast, we start the day with a scenic drive through the Dades Valley, stopping at the famous “Monkey Fingers” rock formations, so-called for their resemblance to fingers protruding from the earth. We then head towards the Todra Gorge, a stunning natural wonder with towering cliffs that rise up to 300 meters, creating a narrow passageway. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to walk along the riverbed, taking in the impressive scenery, or just relax and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the gorge.

Next, we continue to Erfoud, a town known for its fossil-rich soil, where you’ll learn about Morocco’s prehistoric past and visit local fossil workshops. We then drive south toward Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara Desert. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your camel caravan, which will take you on a trek into the vast Erg Chebbi dunes. The dunes stretch as far as the eye can see, and during the trek, you’ll be able to witness a breathtaking sunset as the colors of the sand shift in the fading light.

Arriving at a traditional desert camp, you’ll be welcomed with refreshing mint tea and a traditional Moroccan dinner. Spend the night under the stars in a luxury or traditional desert camp, experiencing the stillness of the desert night while listening to Berber music and stories around the campfire.

  • Day 3:

Merzouga – Rissani Market – Camel Ride – Visit Khamlia – Merzouga

Wake up early to catch the sunrise over the desert, a magical experience as the first light of day spills across the golden dunes. After breakfast at the camp, we return by camel to Merzouga, where we’ll freshen up before heading out for a day of exploration. Our first stop is Rissani, a town known for its vibrant, traditional market (souks). This market is one of the busiest in the region and offers everything from spices to local crafts, as well as livestock and fresh produce. It’s a great opportunity to experience the local culture and interact with the people of the area.

Next, we drive to Khamlia, a small village famous for its Gnawa music, a unique musical style brought to Morocco by descendants of Sub-Saharan Africans. Here, you’ll enjoy a performance of Gnawa music and gain insight into the culture of the village’s inhabitants.

Afterward, you’ll have time to relax in Merzouga before a final evening in the desert. Enjoy a peaceful dinner at your hotel or guesthouse and reflect on the experiences of the past few days.

  • Day 4:

    Merzouga – Alnif – Tazarine – Ouarzazate

Today, we bid farewell to the desert and head towards Ouarzazate, but not before passing through some of Morocco’s most remote and untouched desert landscapes. We drive through Alnif and Tazarine, small Berber towns that give you a glimpse into the traditional way of life in southern Morocco. The roads wind through expansive desert plateaus, dotted with small villages and dramatic mountain scenery.

In the late afternoon, we reach Ouarzazate, also known as the “Gateway to the Sahara”, which has become a hub for the film industry due to its unique landscapes and proximity to the desert. Check-in at your hotel and enjoy dinner before having some free time to relax after a long day of travel.

  • Day 4:

Ouarzazate – Taourirt Kasbah – Tizi n’Tichka Pass – Marrakech

After breakfast, we visit the Taourirt Kasbah, one of the most famous and well-preserved kasbahs in the region. The intricate architecture of this 19th-century fortress offers insight into Morocco’s rich history. Afterward, we explore the Atlas Film Studios, where major Hollywood productions have been filmed, including Gladiator and The Mummy.

We then begin our return journey to Marrakech, retracing part of the route through the High Atlas Mountains. We will stop for lunch along the way and take time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, including more views of the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. After a scenic drive, we will arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon, concluding your incredible desert adventure.
